Christmas Picture Books
In Iceland, the Christmas Eve tradition is to exchange books and spend the rest of the night reading and eating chocolate. In the busyness that we tend to create in this season, doesn’t that sound lovely?
I have always loved the idea of winter being the time of year to slow down and reset. But then you insert a holiday and that feeling seems to get throw to the wayside. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good holiday. But after having kids, I realize what I enjoy the most are days together that are slow and meaningful. There is a place for busy and right now, I do not feel the need to add that in.
Each year, we add one new Christmas book to our library that really captures the spirit and meaning of Christmas. I pride myself and take a great responsibility in creating our TBR shelves (mine and my kids), as I want good stories with sustenance behind them. I chose a few family favorites that are tried and true over the years to share with you today. If you are any bit of a sap like me, make sure you have a Kleenex.
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski. Beautiful illustrations and story about how our life experiences can shape us, but a transformation is always possible.
The Miracle of Saint Nicholas by Gloria Whelan. It takes place in a small Russian village where a little boy learns about what Christmas was like before the soldiers came. A beautiful story and artwork about how the faith remained alive within the community.
The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. This book is such a good reminder of keeping the magic alive in all us of, no matter the age.
Dessert Pairing
The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree by Gloria Houston. I love a story with a strong sense of place and this book checks that box. The story will transport you to Appalachia and is about the strength and courage of a family to keep the Christmas tradition alive. This book will hit close to home for our military crew.
